This weekend marks 20 years since one of the worst race riots in America claimed the lives of 53 individuals, injured thousands and caused over $1 billion in damages in Los Angeles after the acquittal of four police officers who were videotaped beating Rodney King.

Following racially-motivated attacks against black and white teenagers earlier this month, we are sharing last year’s CNN documentary Race and Rage – The Beating of Rodney King to open the discussion on racial violence. As we look at Emmett Till, King and Trayvon Martin, have race relations improved?

VIDEO: ABC’S INTERRACIAL DATING EXPERIMENT – WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

ABC’s ‘Primetime’recently held an another experiment on its popular show, ‘What Would You Do?,’ where people are faced with that very question when experiencing a dilemma or uncomfortable situation that tests their personal character and values.

In a more recent segment, John Quiñones has actors Carlton and Olivia play an interracial couple pretend that they are meeting one of their parents for the first time. In the clip, a Caucasian young woman is sitting with her father (who also happens to be an actor) and introduces him to her boyfriend, an African-American male.

As onlookers watch the far from quiet event, one person reacted to the father’s negative reaction and didn’t appreciate his blatant racism, others agreed with the father’s disapproval of their relationship, especially one elderly woman. CL TOPIC: CNN TOUCHES ON TEENS, PARENTS & INTERRACIAL DATING – WHAT’S YOUR TAKE?

In an effort to dig deeper into the topic of the racial and social issues, CNN’s Soledad O’Brien and Anderson Cooper interviewed a panel of teens and parents for CNN’s ‘Kids on Race: The Hidden Picture’ study. During their television segment, three families were brought onto a panel – two African-American and one Caucasian – and discussed the sensitive topic of interracial dating.

Jimmy, the teen from the African-American family, talked about his experience with racist jokes and shared how his parents would probably react to him bringing home a caucasian girlfriend:

“When I tell my parents, when I did, I had dated a white girl and then they said, they’re not racist – they said, ‘why not your own kind?’ Because all my girls have been white…I mean it wasn’t like they were like, ‘You need to choose a black girl!’ It’s just they were asking me why I liked white girls. And I’m like, ‘No particular reason.’”

His father, Jimmy Sr. explained that they as parent’s do not care, but just wanted to makes sure that there isn’t anything wrong with him dating girls of his own race.

Luke, the second teen from the Caucasian family admitted that his parents would probably have an issue with him dating an African-American girl: Continue

CL TOPIC: GEORGE LUCAS TALKS DIFFICULTY GETTING HOLLYWOOD BACKING FOR ‘RED TAILS’ – WILL YOU SUPPORT THE FILM?

As you all may or may not know, one of the first all-black action pictures Red Tails premiered worldwide in movie theaters today, Friday, January 20th. Earlier this month, the producer/director George Lucas stopped by The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and talked about the challenges he had while making the film, how long it took to bring his idea to life as well as who he had in mind when creating the film:

ON HOW LONG IT TOOK TO CREATE ‘RED TAILS’:
23 years. We finished it. I financed it himself. I figured I could get the prints and ads paid for by the studios and that they would release it. And I showed it to all of them and they they said, ‘No. We don’t know how to market a movie like this.’ [...] It’s because it’s an all black movie. There’s no major white roles in it at all. It’s one of the first all-black action pictures ever made.

ON WHY THE MOVIE WASN’T INITIALLY SUPPORTED:
It’s a reasonably expensive movie. Normally black movies, like a Tyler Perry movie or something, they’re very low budget. Even they won’t even release his movies. They usually go to one of the non-major distributors. And they do well, but they do a certain amount of money and they know what that is. And this [Red Tails] costs more than what those movies make. And they don’t believe there’s any foreign market for it, but that’s 60% of their profit.

ON WHY HE CREATED THE FILM:
It was presented as – which was the reason I did it – I wanted to make it inspirational for teenage boys. I wanted to show that they have heroes, that they’re real American heroes, they’re patriots that helped make the country what it is today, and it’s not Glory where you have a lot of white officers running these guys into cannon fire. They were real heroes.
